7. 잠자는 사자를 깨워라

  그 존재 여부는 오래전부터 알고 있었지만, 막상 언론이 대서특필한 기사를 보고 나니 그 심각성을 짐작하고도 남겠다. 일진회 얘기다. 그 기원(?)에는 일본 만화가 있다. 어느 일본 만화에 등장하는 폭력적 집단을 그대로 따라 했다. 그냥 재미로 따라 한 것이 아니라, 조직적이고 계획적으로 실천한 것이다. 만화적 상상을 현실로 옮겼는데, 하필이면 절대로 따라 하지 말아야 할 것을 했다.

  일본 만화나 애니메이션은 세계적으로 인정받는 수준이지만, 인프라가 크게 형성된 만큼 어두운 면도 많고, 이미 우리나라에도 그 어두운(!) 만화들이 상당수 유입되어 읽히고 있다. 어른들은 그걸 모르고 있고, 알더라도 통제는 거의 불가능하다. 과거 그런 만화들은 몰래 숨어서 읽는 것들이었다. 내용의 선정성이나 폭력성에 대해 인지하며 읽었고, 따라 하고는 싶지만 해서는 안 된다는 것도 알았다. 그러나 지금의 아이들은 조금 다르다.

 

 

  어른들이 보면 놀라서 눈이 휘둥그레질 수준의 만화를 보고 시큰둥하게 반응한다. 그런 것들을 별 죄책감 없이 받아들이고 있다. 주변에 너무나 흔하게 볼 수 있기 때문이다. ‘숨어서 몰래’ 하던, 즉 남이 알면 안 되던 어떤 것들이 이젠 공공연하고 당연한 것이 되었기 때문이다. 폭력적인 만화-든 어떤 것이든-를 따라 하는 것에 대해 죄책감을 느낄 이유가 사라져 가는 중이다. 이번 일은 앞으로 터져 나올 청소년 문제의 빙산의 일각으로 보고 대처해야 한다.

  어쩌다 이렇게 까지 되었을까. 왜 긍정적인 방향의 모방은 버려졌을까. 대학을 최우선으로 생각하고 학교와 학원 교육에 치중하는 동안 가정교육은 어디로 사라졌는지, 그 중요성에 대해 목소리를 높이는 사람도 찾기 힘들다. 너무나 안타깝다. 가정교육에 충실하기 위해서 먼저 바뀌어야 할 것은 어른들이다. 사랑과 관심이라는 추상적인 말속에 구체적인 대안이 있음을 우리는 경험적으로 알고 있다. 아이들 속에 숨어있는 무한한 긍정적 잠재력을 깨워야 한다.

Awaken the Sleeping Lions - March 2005

 

We had known of their existence for a long time, but seeing the newspaper's special feature article brought the gravity of the situation to the forefront of our minds. The "Iljin-hoe" phenomenon. It originated from a Japanese comic book. They simply copied a violent gang depicted in a Japanese manga. It wasn't just done for fun; it was executed systematically and deliberately. They turned fictional imagination into reality, and unfortunately, they chose something that should have never been imitated.

 

While Japanese manga and anime are internationally acclaimed, they have a darker side, and a considerable number of these dark(!) comics have found their way into our country as well. Many adults are unaware of this, and even if they are aware, it's almost impossible to control. In the past, such comics were read in secret. We read them with awareness of their content's selectivity and violence, and we knew we shouldn't imitate them. However, today's children are a little different.

 

When adults see these comics, they are shocked and react with wide-eyed disbelief. Yet, they are accepting them without any sense of guilt. They see them too commonly around them. The things that were done secretly or not to be known by others have now become public and ordinary. The sense of guilt about imitating violent comics—or anything, for that matter—is gradually disappearing. This incident should be seen as just one tip of the iceberg of the adolescent problems that will emerge in the future, and we must handle it accordingly.

 

How did we end up like this? Why were positive forms of imitation discarded? Could the "Iljin-hoe" have become a group that took one step further based on positive directions? While universities are prioritized, and schools and private academies are emphasized, where has the importance of home education disappeared? It's hard to find someone who raises their voice about its significance. It's so regrettable. To be faithful to home education, adults must change first. We know from experience that within the abstract words of love and care, there are concrete alternatives. We must awaken the infinite positive potential hidden within children.
