  ‘언제나 방법은 있다’

  영화 '레모니 스니켓*의 위험한 여행(Lemony Snickete's A Series of Unfortunate Events)’**에 나오는 남자 주인공이 위험에 처할 때마다 되뇌는 말이다. 다른 많은 영화에서 그랬듯이 이 영화의 주인공인 소년도 여러 난관을 적극적이고 긍정적으로 생각하며 헤쳐 나간다. 하지만 이 어린 소년의 대사는 문득 새롭다.

  언제나 방법은 있었다. 어쩔 수 없다며 피해왔던 많은 일들에, 사실 언제나 있었던 방법을 나는 굳이 찾으려 하지 않았다. 지금 이 순간도 내가 훨씬 행복할 수 있는 방법이 내 눈을 피해서 휙휙 지나가는 것 같다. 나는 가만히 앉아서 기다리고 있고, 그 방법이 눈에 보이길 또 기다린다. 바보 같다.

최선을 다한다는 것은 아주 좋은 것이지만, 또 한편으론 스스로 한계를 만드는 말이기도 하다. 그 말속엔 ‘내가 할 수 있는 한’이라는 말이 내포되어 있기 때문이다. 그 한계선의 높이는 사람마다 다르지만, 그 한계선이 경우에 따라 높낮이가 달라지는 것은 누구나 똑같다.

  그 어린 소년의 한마디가 문득 새롭게 느껴지는 것은 이 때문이다. 언제나 있는 방법을 찾기 전에 내 스스로에게 한계를 그어놓고 그저 최선을 다했다고만 생각하는, 너무나 바보 같은 생각을 당연하고 도덕적인 것으로 받아들이고 있었다. ‘언제나 방법은 있다’는 그 말엔 한계가 없고, 긍정적이고 희망적이다.

  갑자기 고1 학생들이 생각난다. 우리나라 교육 현실이 낳은 문제이고, 그것은 결국 우리 스스로 만든 문제다. 여기에도 분명 방법은 있을 것이다.

"Always Something"

 

The protagonist in the movie "A Series of Unfortunate Events" repeats this phrase whenever he finds himself in danger. Like in many other movies, the young boy in this film also faces numerous challenges, approaching them with a proactive and positive mindset. However, the boy's dialogue is strikingly new.

 

There was always a way. Amidst many situations where I helplessly claimed it was unavoidable, I didn't bother to seek the solutions that were always there. Even now, it feels like there are ways for me to be much happier, passing right by me while I deliberately turn a blind eye. I sit still, waiting, waiting for those solutions to appear visibly. How foolish of me.

 

Striving to do one's best is undoubtedly a good thing, but on the other hand, it's also a self-imposed limitation. The phrase contains the implicit statement, "as much as I can do." The height of that limit varies from person to person, but the fact that the height of that limit can change depending on the circumstances is universal.

 

This is why the young boy's words suddenly feel so new. I had been foolishly accepting the idea of merely doing my best while drawing limits for myself before finding the ever-present solutions. "Always there is a way" carries no limits; it is positive and hopeful.

 

Suddenly, I recall the high school freshmen. The problems in our education system in Korea are an issue we've created ourselves. Surely, there must be a way to address this as well.
