5. 풍경

  내내 창밖만 바라본다.

  지하철이 지상으로 나와 도심을 가르는 동안, 별로 친하게 지내지 않던 풍경들이 내게 인사를 한다. 회색 빌딩 숲 한 자락이 지나면, 사철 푸른 상록수와 그 곁을 지나던 바람이 얘기를 하는데, 그 모습이 참 다정해 보인다. 간혹 도시에 적응한 새들이 둘의 얘기를 엿듣기도 하고, 꼭 뿌옇지만은 않은 햇빛이 마치 전설을 들려주듯이, 신비하고 근엄하게 나뭇잎을 비춘다.

  그 순간이 잠깐이었을까. 얼마의 시간이 지났는지 모르게 지하철은 다시 땅 속으로 들어갔다. 맞은편 창에는 다른 세상에서 막 돌아온 것 같은 내가 있고, 나와 비슷한 종류의 흔들거리는 그 무엇들이 있고, 오래되어 깜빡이는 형광등 불빛을 TV 모니터가 반사시키고 있다. 표정 없이, 시선 둔 곳 없이 땅 속을 달리는 사람들의 모습엔, 삶의 한 구석에 쪼그리고 앉은 고단함이 가득하다.

 

 

  모든 것이 움직이고 있지만, 살아있는 것은 없었다. 이 절대적인 침묵이 산산이 깨진 것은, 전철 문이 열리고 서너 명의 아이들이 장난치며 시끄럽게 뛰어 들어오면서부터였다. 아이들은 전철 칸칸을 뛰어다니며 자신들의 존재를 알리기에 바빴다. 시끄럽다고 호통 치시는 할아버지와, 키득거리는 몇몇의 여고생을 제외하면 온전히 그 아이들의 세상이었다. 살아 있었고, 생기가 넘쳤다. 만일 이 공간에 표정이 있었다면 흥분되고 밝은, 너무나 반가운 표정이었을 것이다.

  그러나 이 아이들은 알고 있을까. 조금은 숨이 차게 가파른 언덕에 올라, 산과 나무들을 등지고 연을 날리는 재미와, 봄이 온 그곳에 작은 길을 따라 들리던 새소리와, 적어도 나무 그늘 아래에는 여름이 없었던 시원한 바람, 밤 한번 먹어보자고 나무에 오르며 간식과 놀이를 동시에 해결했던 그 가을에 어떤 아름다움이 있었는지를.

  내가 이 회색 천지의 도시에 적응해 가는 동안, 아이들은 그 안에서 태어나고 자라왔다. 지금 이 전철 안에서 침묵시위를 벌이는 어른들의 추억 속엔 푸른 자연이 곁들여 있지만, 머지않은 미래에 같은 자리에 앉을 아이들의 추억 속엔 푸르고 시원한 영상이 얼마나 포함돼 있을까. 그리고 그다음 세대에의 풍경화에는 어떤 그림이 그려질까. 

  가던 길을 서두르던 바람은 해가 지기 전에 어디론가 떠나고, 이제는 새들을 벗 삼아 얘기하던 나무도 곧 잠들 것이다. 내일 아침 이 거대한 도시는 그 나무와 바람과 새들에게, 흥분되고 밝은, 너무나 반가운 표정을 지을 것이다.

Landscape - January 2005

 

All this time, I gaze out the window.

 

As the subway emerges from the underground and cuts through the heart of the city, the landscapes that I wasn't particularly close to greet me. A row of gray buildings passes by, and the evergreen pines with their bluish shades, and the breeze that used to whisper by their side, they all seem so affectionate. Sometimes, city-adapted birds eavesdrop on their conversation, and the not-so-faint sunlight reflects on the leaves as if narrating a legend.

 

But that moment was brief. Before I knew it, the subway returned underground. On the opposite window, there's another me, who seems to have just returned from a different world, and some similar trembling entities. Fluorescent lights from old flickering monitors cast their glow without any expressions, without any focused gazes, as the people in the subway dash through the underground with weariness filling their corners of life.

 

Everything is in motion, yet nothing was truly alive. The absolute silence shattered when the subway doors opened, and several children came bounding in, making a ruckus. The children occupied the subway car, running around and announcing their existence. Their excitement and joy would have been evident on their faces if expressions existed here.

 

But do these children know? How exhilarating it was to climb up the steep hillside, gazing at the mountains and trees, blowing on reeds, listening to the chirping birds in the place where spring had just arrived. And how, at least under the shade of the trees, there was a refreshing breeze, and on a summer night, they once climbed the trees to feast and play together. What kind of beauty existed in those memories?

 

While I adapt to this city of gray concrete, these children were born and raised within it. In the memories of the adults, who are now holding a silent protest inside the subway, there are traces of the green nature. But in the not-so-distant future, what images of blue and refreshing scenes will be included in the memories of these children? And in the next generation's landscape, what pictures will be drawn?

 

The wind that hurried along the path will have gone somewhere before the sun sets, and the trees, which were once conversing with the birds, will soon fall asleep. Tomorrow morning, this massive city will welcome the trees, the wind, and the birds with faces filled with excitement, joy, and warm smiles.
